If you have the worst web design, you will not be able to achieve increase traffic because people may think that your site has not been maintained well and you as the owner seem to be not interested on your own site.
JavaScript and flash websites are also harder to attract natural traffic from search engines. This is because they are hard to index. Search engine spiders seek out texts and keywords to know what a website is all about. With too much flash or JavaScript content, you leave search engines confused about what your website is all about.
Web design uses all the same elements as print design. You need to explore the space and layout, handle fonts and colors, and put it all together in a format that puts your message across.
